 Joanna holds degrees in Music Education and Violin Performance from the University of Western Australia and the Canberra School of Music as well as a PhD in Musicology. In 1996 she completed a Masters in Music ,at the University of Texas in Austin, in violin and conducting. In March-April 2000 she undertook private conducting studies with David Effron at Indiana University, Bloomington. Joanna has been a masterclass participant in conducting workshops given by the Auckland Philharmonia and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra with Miguel Harth-Bedoya and Matthias Bamert.

In February 2004 she was selected to participate in the American Symphony League's Donald Thulean Conducting Workshop where she conducted the Atlanta Symphony Chorus and the Atlanta Youth Orchestra. Now living in Adelaide, South Australia, Joanna lectures part-time at the University of Adelaide's Elder Conservatorium of Music and conducts the Adelaide Youth Sinfonia.
